How Low Iron Glass is Created
Manufacturers create low iron glass by reducing the amount of iron normally found in clear glass. Modifying the iron content increases light transparency by up to 6 percent.
Therefore, architects and designers prefer that glass fabricators use low iron glass when color-matching. If you prefer to order the glass without color-matching, you have the option to choose plain clear low iron glass.
Low Iron Glass vs. Regular Glass
Regular Glass
Standard clear glass is not the clearest type of glass we fabricate. While regular clear glass does not have a high iron content, it is still higher than low iron glass. It is the iron that causes clear glass to have a slightly greenish tint. This green color is especially noticeable around the edge of the glass.
If you’re looking to have the glass back-painted or coated a specific color, it can be difficult to match the specific color you’re looking for. For this reason, we typically recommend low iron glass for these applications instead.
Low Iron Glass
Low iron glass is more transparent than regular glass, because the majority of the green tint has been removed.
Since the edges are much than edges on standard clear glass, you can use it for a wider range of applications where glass clarity is essential for the overall design.
